A path for everyone
Hanafi School

"Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater."

Sūrah al-ʿAnkabūt · 29:45 · Sahih International

Salat is the second pillar of Islam — five daily prayers that anchor a Muslim's day in the remembrance of Allah. Each prayer is a conversation, a return, a moment of peace in a noisy world.

This guide walks you through one full rakʿah (cycle) — the building block of every prayer. Once you know the rakʿah, you know how to pray. The rulings here follow the Hanafi school of Islamic jurisprudence, with notes for women's prayer where it differs.

Before you begin

  • Make sure your body, clothes, and place of prayer are clean
  • Perform wudu (ablution) if you do not already have it
  • Cover your ʿawrah modestly — for men: navel to knees; for women: all of the body except face and hands
  • Face the Qibla — the direction of the Kaʿbah in Mecca
  • Make sure it is the correct prayer time — check our Prayer Times page
  • Find a quiet space, free of distraction
Step 01 of 15
Niyyah
Step 01

Niyyah

Make the intention to pray

Make the intention in your heart for the specific prayer you are about to perform — for example, the four farḍ rakʿahs of Ẓuhr. The place of intention is the heart, but in the Hanafi school it is also mustaḥabb (recommended) to verbalise it quietly. The intention specifies which prayer you are praying, how many rakʿahs, and that it is for the sake of Allah.

💡 The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Verily, actions are by intentions.' (Bukhari 1, Muslim 1907) Without intention, an outwardly perfect prayer has no spiritual weight.
Step 02

Takbīr al-Iḥrām

Raise hands to the earlobes and say the opening Takbīr

Recite
Allāhu Akbar
Allah is the Greatest

Stand upright facing the Qibla. Raise both hands so that your thumbs touch your earlobes, palms facing forward, fingers neither tightly together nor spread apart. Say Allāhu Akbar. From this moment you have entered the state of iḥrām for the prayer — speech, eating, drinking, and turning away are no longer permitted.

For womenWomen raise their hands to their shoulders rather than to their earlobes, with hands kept inside their garment.
💡 Once you have said this Takbīr, you are in conversation with Allah. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'The key to prayer is purification, its opening is the Takbīr, and its closing is the salām.' (Abu Dawud 61, Tirmidhi 3) Whatever was on your mind a moment ago — let it go.
Step 03

Qiyām & Thanāʾ

Place hands below the navel and recite the opening praise

Recite
Subḥānaka Allāhumma wa biḥamdik, wa tabārakasmuk, wa taʿālā jadduk, wa lā ilāha ghayruk
Glory is to You, O Allah, and praise. Blessed is Your name, exalted is Your majesty, and there is no god besides You.
Jamiʿ at-Tirmidhī 243 — narrated by ʿĀʾishah (raḍiyallāhu ʿanhā). Graded ḥasan.

Lower your hands and place your right hand over your left, below the navel. The right hand grasps the left wrist, with the thumb and little finger encircling it. Lower your gaze to the spot where you will prostrate. Then quietly recite the Thanāʾ — the opening praise of Allah.

For womenWomen place their right hand over the left on their chest, without grasping the wrist.
💡 The Thanāʾ is recited only in the first rakʿah of every prayer, and is recited silently — even in prayers where the imam recites aloud.
Step 04

Taʿawwudh & Tasmiyah

Seek refuge in Allah, then say Bismillāh

Recite
Aʿūdhu billāhi min ash-shayṭān ir-rajīm · Bismillāh ir-Raḥmān ir-Raḥīm
I seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the accursed · In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Quran 16:98 commands seeking refuge before recitation. Bismillāh is the opening of every surah except Tawbah.

Before reciting Sūrah al-Fātiḥah, seek refuge in Allah from Shayṭān, then say Bismillāh. Both are recited silently, even in audible prayers.

💡 The Taʿawwudh is only said in the first rakʿah. The Bismillāh is said silently before al-Fātiḥah in every rakʿah.
Step 05

Sūrah al-Fātiḥah

Recite the Opening of the Quran

Recite
Al-ḥamdu lillāhi Rabbi l-ʿālamīn · Ar-Raḥmān ir-Raḥīm · Māliki yawmi d-dīn · Iyyāka naʿbudu wa iyyāka nastaʿīn · Ihdina ṣ-ṣirāṭa l-mustaqīm · Ṣirāṭa lladhīna anʿamta ʿalayhim ghayri l-maghḍūbi ʿalayhim wa la ḍ-ḍāllīn
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds · The Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful · Sovereign of the Day of Recompense · You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help · Guide us to the straight path · The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favour, not of those who have evoked Your anger or of those who are astray
Sūrah al-Fātiḥah, Quran 1:1–7. Translation: Sahih International.

Recite Sūrah al-Fātiḥah — the foundation of every prayer. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'There is no prayer for the one who does not recite the Opening of the Book.' (Bukhari 756) After completing the surah, say Āmīn silently (the Hanafi position).

💡 Al-Fātiḥah is the most important thing to learn first. It is recited in every single rakʿah of every prayer — over 17 times a day in the obligatory prayers alone.
Step 06

Additional Sūrah

Recite another short surah or three verses

Recite
Qul huwa Allāhu aḥad · Allāhu ṣ-ṣamad · Lam yalid wa lam yūlad · Wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan aḥad
Say: He is Allah, the One · Allah, the Eternal Refuge · He neither begets nor is born · Nor is there to Him any equivalent
Sūrah al-Ikhlāṣ (Quran 112). Translation: Sahih International.

After al-Fātiḥah, recite another surah or at least three short verses from the Quran. This is only done in the first two rakʿahs of farḍ prayers. In sunnah and nafl prayers, additional surah is recited in every rakʿah. Sūrah al-Ikhlāṣ is shown here as the most commonly memorised example.

💡 The Prophet ﷺ said reciting Sūrah al-Ikhlāṣ is equal to one third of the Quran in reward. (Bukhari 5013) It's an excellent first surah for beginners — only four short verses.
Step 07

Rukūʿ

Bow forward, hands gripping the knees

Recite
Subḥāna Rabbi-ya l-ʿAẓīm
Glory is to my Lord, the Magnificent
Sunan Abi Dawud 869 — narrated by ʿUqbah ibn ʿĀmir. The Prophet ﷺ taught this when the verse 'Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most Great' (56:74) was revealed.

Say Allāhu Akbar (this time without raising the hands) and bow forward. Grasp your knees firmly with your fingers spread, keep your back straight and parallel to the ground, head level with your back. Keep your arms away from your sides. Recite the tasbīḥ at least three times — though more (5, 7, or higher odd numbers) is better.

For womenWomen bow only as much as needed (not as deeply as men), keep their fingers together on the knees, and keep their arms close to their sides.
💡 The Prophet ﷺ said: 'The closest a servant comes to his Lord is when he is in prostration, so make much supplication then.' (Muslim 482) Pause and reflect — don't rush.
Step 08

Iʿtidāl

Rise from bowing and stand upright

Recite
Samiʿa Allāhu liman ḥamidah · Rabbanā laka l-ḥamd
Allah hears those who praise Him · Our Lord, to You belongs all praise
Sahih al-Bukhari 795 — narrated by Abu Hurayrah.

Rise from rukūʿ to a fully upright standing position. Do not raise your hands when rising (this is the Hanafi position — other schools differ here). When praying alone, say both phrases yourself. When praying behind an imam, the imam says 'Samiʿa Allāhu liman ḥamidah' and the followers respond only with 'Rabbanā laka l-ḥamd'.

💡 Stand still and at peace before going down into sujūd. This brief moment of standing — called qawmah — is part of the prayer, not a transition to be rushed through.
Step 09

Sujūd

Prostrate, with seven points touching the ground

Recite
Subḥāna Rabbi-ya l-Aʿlā
Glory is to my Lord, the Most High
Sunan Abi Dawud 870 — narrated by ʿUqbah ibn ʿĀmir.

Say Allāhu Akbar and lower yourself to the ground in this order: knees first, then hands, then nose, then forehead (Hanafi position). Seven body parts must touch the ground: forehead, nose, both palms, both knees, and the toes of both feet (with toes pointing toward Qibla). Keep your elbows raised off the ground and away from your sides. Recite the tasbīḥ at least three times.

For womenWomen keep their arms close to their sides, elbows touching the ground, and their body more compact and close to the floor — the entire posture is more drawn in than a man's.
💡 Sujūd is the closest a servant comes to their Lord. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'The most beloved actions to Allah are those done consistently, even if small.' (Bukhari 6464) Pour your heart out here — make any duʿā in your own language after the tasbīḥ.
Step 10

Jalsah

Sit briefly between the two prostrations

Recite
(no fixed recitation is wājib here; many recite Allāhumma ghfir lī)
O Allah, forgive me

Say Allāhu Akbar, rise from sujūd, and sit upright. Sit on your left foot folded beneath you, with the right foot upright and toes pointing toward Qibla. Place your hands flat on your thighs, fingers reaching just to the knees. Sit calmly — do not rush.

For womenWomen sit with both feet pointing out to the right side (this is called tawarruk) rather than sitting on the left foot.
💡 Many people rush this moment. The Prophet ﷺ would lengthen it. It is part of the prayer's rhythm of humility and a moment to ask forgiveness before returning to prostration.
Step 11

Second Sujūd

Prostrate a second time, exactly as the first

Recite
Subḥāna Rabbi-ya l-Aʿlā
Glory is to my Lord, the Most High

Say Allāhu Akbar and prostrate a second time, exactly as before — knees first, then hands, then nose, then forehead. Recite the tasbīḥ at least three times. After this second prostration, you have completed one full rakʿah — one cycle of the prayer.

💡 A rakʿah is built from: standing → bowing → two prostrations. Each obligatory prayer has a fixed number of rakʿahs: Fajr 2 · Ẓuhr 4 · ʿAṣr 4 · Maghrib 3 · ʿIshāʾ 4. After this sujūd, either stand for the next rakʿah, or proceed to Tashahhud if this is your final rakʿah.
Step 12

Tashahhud

Sit and recite the testimony of faith

Recite
At-taḥiyyātu lillāhi wa ṣ-ṣalawātu wa ṭ-ṭayyibāt · As-salāmu ʿalayka ayyuha n-Nabiyyu wa raḥmatu llāhi wa barakātuh · As-salāmu ʿalaynā wa ʿalā ʿibādi llāhi ṣ-ṣāliḥīn · Ash-hadu an lā ilāha illa llāh, wa ash-hadu anna Muḥammadan ʿabduhu wa rasūluh
All greetings, prayers, and pure words are for Allah · Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings · Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah · I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad ﷺ is His servant and messenger
Sahih al-Bukhari 6265, Sahih Muslim 402 — narrated by ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd. The Prophet ﷺ taught him the Tashahhud holding his hand, as he would teach a surah of the Quran. This is the version preferred by the Hanafi school.

After every two rakʿahs, sit in the jalsah position and recite the Tashahhud. When you reach the words 'lā ilāha' (no god), form a circle with your right thumb and middle finger and raise your right index finger. Then lower it at 'illa llāh' (except Allah). The other fingers remain folded. After lowering the finger, your right hand returns to a relaxed position on your thigh.

💡 The Tashahhud is recited silently in every prayer, regardless of whether the prayer itself is audible. If this is the second rakʿah of a 3 or 4 rakʿah prayer, stop here, say Allāhu Akbar, and stand up for the next rakʿah. If this is your final sitting, continue to the Durood.
Step 13

Durood Ibrāhīm

Send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ

Recite
Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā Muḥammadin wa ʿalā āli Muḥammad, kamā ṣallayta ʿalā Ibrāhīma wa ʿalā āli Ibrāhīm, innaka Ḥamīdun Majīd · Allāhumma bārik ʿalā Muḥammadin wa ʿalā āli Muḥammad, kamā bārakta ʿalā Ibrāhīma wa ʿalā āli Ibrāhīm, innaka Ḥamīdun Majīd
O Allah, send Your mercy upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your mercy upon Ibrāhīm and the family of Ibrāhīm. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, send Your blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your blessings upon Ibrāhīm and the family of Ibrāhīm. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.
Sahih al-Bukhari 3370 — narrated by Kaʿb ibn ʿUjrah. The Companions asked the Prophet ﷺ how they should send blessings upon him, and he taught them this exact wording.

After completing the Tashahhud in your final sitting, recite the Durood Ibrāhīm — sending blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his family. This is recited only in the final sitting before the salām.

💡 The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever sends blessings upon me once, Allah sends blessings upon him ten times.' (Muslim 408) This moment of the prayer is one of the most beloved.
Step 14

Duʿā

Make a supplication before closing the prayer

Recite
Allāhumma innī ẓalamtu nafsī ẓulman kathīran, wa lā yaghfiru dh-dhunūba illā anta, faghfir lī maghfiratan min ʿindika, warḥamnī, innaka anta l-Ghafūru r-Raḥīm
O Allah, I have wronged myself greatly, and none can forgive sins except You. So forgive me with forgiveness from Yourself, and have mercy on me. Truly You are the Forgiving, the Merciful.
Sahih al-Bukhari 834, Sahih Muslim 2705 — narrated by Abu Bakr aṣ-Ṣiddīq (raḍiyallāhu ʿanhu), who asked the Prophet ﷺ to teach him a duʿā for his prayer.

After the Durood, before the closing salām, it is recommended to make a duʿā. This duʿā taught by the Prophet ﷺ to Abu Bakr is the most well-known and beloved. You may also add other supplications from the Quran and Sunnah.

💡 Only Quranic verses or duʿās from authentic ḥadīth are recited inside the prayer. Personal duʿās in your own language can be made after the prayer is complete.
Step 15

Taslīm

Turn your face right and left to give the salām

Recite
As-salāmu ʿalaykum wa raḥmatullāh
Peace and the mercy of Allah be upon you
Sahih Muslim 582 — narrated by Saʿd ibn Abi Waqqāṣ. The Prophet ﷺ would turn his face right and left until the whiteness of his cheek could be seen.

Turn your head to the right until your cheek can be seen from behind, and say the salām. Then turn your head to the left and say it again. With the second salām, the prayer is formally complete. You are greeting the angels who recorded your prayer on each side, and returning to the world with peace.

💡 After the Taslīm, it is sunnah to say Astaghfirullāh three times, and then recite the post-prayer adhkār. But the prayer itself is now complete — may Allah accept it.

You've completed one rakʿah

Each daily prayer is built from rakʿahs like the one you've just learned. Now that you know the cycle, you know how to pray any of the five daily prayers — just repeat the rakʿah the right number of times, with the Tashahhud sitting after every two rakʿahs and the full closing (Durood, duʿā, Taslīm) at the very end.

Be patient with yourself. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Allah loves the deeds done consistently, even if small.' Pray a little every day, and it will grow.
