How to use these: Some are for moments you cannot plan — receiving news of a death, attending a janāzah, visiting a graveyard. Others (asking for a good ending, refuge from the punishment of the grave) are for every prayer, every day. Remembering death keeps the heart soft.
Dua 1
When someone passes away
At the moment of death, or upon receiving news of a death
Allāhumma ghfir li-(fulān) warfaʿ darajatahu fi l-mahdiyyīn, wakhlufhu fī ʿaqibihī fi l-ghābirīn, waghfir lanā wa lahu yā Rabba l-ʿālamīn, wafsaḥ lahu fī qabrihī wa nawwir lahu fīh.
O Allah, forgive (name) and elevate his rank among the guided. Be a successor to his dependents among those who remain. Forgive us and him, O Lord of the worlds. Make his grave spacious for him and illuminate it for him.
Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 920 — narrated by Umm Salamah.
Replace (fulān) with the person's name. The Prophet ﷺ made this dua when Abū Salamah died.
Allāhumma ghfir lahu warḥamh, wa ʿāfihi waʿfu ʿanh, wa akrim nuzulah, wa wassiʿ mudkhalah, waghsilhu bi-l-māʾi wa th-thalji wa l-barad, wa naqqihi mina l-khaṭāyā kamā naqqayta th-thawba l-abyaḍa mina d-danas, wa abdilhu dāran khayran min dārih, wa ahlan khayran min ahlih, wa zawjan khayran min zawjih, wa adkhilhu l-jannata wa aʿidhhu min ʿadhābi l-qabri wa min ʿadhābi n-nār.
O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him. Grant him well-being and pardon him. Honour his reception and make his entrance spacious. Wash him with water, snow, and ice. Purify him of sins as a white garment is purified of stains. Give him a home better than his home, a family better than his family, and a spouse better than his spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.
Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 963 — narrated by ʿAwf ibn Mālik.
For a female, change the pronouns (lahu → lahā, ʿāfihi → ʿāfihā, etc.). This is the most comprehensive janāzah dua.
Allāhumma jʿalhu faraṭan wa dhukhran li-wālidayh, wa shafīʿan mujābā. Allāhumma thaqqil bihi mawāzīnahumā, wa aʿẓim bihi ujūrahumā.
O Allah, make him a forerunner and a treasure for his parents, and an accepted intercessor. O Allah, make their scales heavy through him, and increase their reward through him.
Based on narrations in al-Bayhaqī. Similar versions in various hadith collections.
The Prophet ﷺ said: “When a person's child dies, Allah says to His angels: ‘You have taken the fruit of his heart?’ They say: ‘Yes.’ He says: ‘What did My servant say?’ They say: ‘He praised You and said innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn.’ Allah says: ‘Build for My servant a house in Paradise and call it the House of Praise.’” (Tirmidhī 1021)
Dua 5
Offering condolences to the bereaved
Visiting or contacting someone who has lost a loved one
As-salāmu ʿalaykum ahla d-diyāri mina l-muʾminīna wa l-muslimīn, wa innā in shāʾa llāhu bikum lāḥiqūn, nasʾalu llāha lanā wa lakumu l-ʿāfiyah.
Peace be upon you, O inhabitants of these dwellings, believers and Muslims. Indeed, if Allah wills, we will be joining you. We ask Allah for well-being for us and for you.
Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 975 — narrated by Buraydah.
Visiting graves is recommended — the Prophet ﷺ said: “I used to forbid you from visiting graves, but now visit them, for they remind you of the Hereafter.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 977)
Dua 7
Asking for a good death
Regularly — the outcome no one controls but Allah
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ حُسْنَ الْخَاتِمَةِ
Allāhumma innī asʾaluka ḥusna l-khātimah.
O Allah, I ask You for a good ending.
General supplication widely used by scholars. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Deeds are judged by their endings.” (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6493)
Dua 8
Refuge from the punishment of the grave
In every prayer (after the final tashahhud) and regularly
Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika min ʿadhābi l-qabr, wa min ʿadhābi jahannam, wa min fitnati l-maḥyā wa l-mamāt, wa min sharri fitnati l-Masīḥi d-Dajjāl.
O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, from the punishment of Hellfire, from the trials of life and death, and from the evil trial of the False Messiah.
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 1377, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 588 — narrated by Abū Hurayrah.
The Prophet ﷺ taught this as part of the final tashahhud before the salām. Some scholars consider it obligatory.
Dua 9
Save me from the Fire ×3
After every fard prayer, and frequently
اللَّهُمَّ أَجِرْنِي مِنَ النَّارِ
Allāhumma ajirnī mina n-nār.
O Allah, save me from the Fire.
Abū Dāwūd 5079 — narrated by Abū Hurayrah. Also Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2202.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "When you ask Allah, ask Him for al-Firdaws, for it is the highest part of Paradise." Asking for protection from the Fire is its companion.
Dua 10
Ask for Paradise ×3
After every fard prayer, and frequently
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْجَنَّةَ
Allāhumma innī asʾaluka l-jannah.
O Allah, I ask You for Paradise.
Abū Dāwūd 5079, Tirmidhī 2572.
Whoever asks Allah for Paradise three times, Paradise says: "O Allah, admit him to Paradise." And whoever seeks protection from the Fire three times, the Fire says: "O Allah, protect him from the Fire." (Tirmidhī 2572)
Dua 11
Ask for al-Firdaws — the highest Paradise
Whenever you ask for Paradise — always aim for the highest
Allāhumma innī asʾaluka l-Firdawsa l-Aʿlā mina l-Jannah.
O Allah, I ask You for al-Firdaws, the highest part of Paradise.
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 2790, 7423 — narrated by Abū Hurayrah.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "When you ask Allah for Paradise, ask Him for al-Firdaws. It is the highest part of Paradise, and its roof is the Throne of the Most Merciful, and from it spring the rivers of Paradise." Don't settle for less when making dua — the Prophet ﷺ explicitly told us to ask for the very best. Al-Firdaws is the pinnacle, directly beneath the Throne of Allah.
Dua 12
Easy reckoning on the Day of Judgement
Regularly — especially after prayer
اللَّهُمَّ حَاسِبْنِي حِسَابًا يَسِيرًا
Allāhumma ḥāsibnī ḥisāban yasīrā.
O Allah, grant me an easy reckoning.
Musnad Aḥmad 24316 — narrated by ʿĀʾishah. Also referenced in Quran 84:7–8.
ʿĀʾishah asked the Prophet ﷺ about the verse "He will be called to an easy account" (84:8). He replied: "That is merely the presentation. But whoever is scrutinised in the reckoning will be destroyed." — meaning the "easy account" is when Allah simply shows you your deeds and forgives, without detailed interrogation. The Quran describes two reckonings: those who receive their book in the right hand and are given an easy account (84:7–8), and those who are not. This dua asks to be among the first.
