بِسْمِ ٱللَّٰهِ

Bismillāh

In the name of Allah.

Sahih al-Bukhari 5376 — narrated by ʿUmar ibn Abī Salamah. The Prophet ﷺ taught him: 'Mention the name of Allah, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is near you.'

If you forgot Bismillāh

Mid-meal, when remembered

بِسْمِ ٱللَّٰهِ فِي أَوَّلِهِ وَآخِرِهِ

Bismillāhi fī awwalihi wa ākhirih

In the name of Allah, at its beginning and its end.

Sunan Abī Dāwūd 3767, Jamiʿ at-Tirmidhī 1858 — narrated by ʿĀʾishah.

After eating

On finishing a meal

ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّٰهِ ٱلَّذِي أَطْعَمَنَا وَسَقَانَا وَجَعَلَنَا مُسْلِمِينَ

Al-ḥamdu lillāhi lladhī aṭʿamanā wa saqānā wa jaʿalanā muslimīn

All praise is for Allah, who has fed us and given us drink, and made us Muslims.

Sunan Abī Dāwūd 3850, Jamiʿ at-Tirmidhī 3457 — narrated by Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī.

Before drinking water

Before any drink

بِسْمِ ٱللَّٰهِ

Bismillāh

In the name of Allah.

Sahih Muslim 2020 — Ibn ʿUmar reported the Prophet ﷺ said: 'When any of you eats, eat with the right hand, and when you drink, drink with the right hand.'

Before entering the bathroom

Stepping into the toilet

ٱللَّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ ٱلْخُبُثِ وَٱلْخَبَائِثِ

Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika mina l-khubuthi wa l-khabāʾith

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from male and female devils.

Sahih al-Bukhari 142, Sahih Muslim 375 — narrated by Anas ibn Mālik.

Leaving the bathroom

On stepping out

غُفْرَانَكَ

Ghufrānak

I seek Your forgiveness.

Sunan Abī Dāwūd 30, Jamiʿ at-Tirmidhī 7 — narrated by ʿĀʾishah.

Recited after Fajr

أَصْبَحْنَا وَأَصْبَحَ ٱلْمُلْكُ لِلَّٰهِ، وَٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّٰهِ، لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّٰهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ

Aṣbaḥnā wa aṣbaḥa l-mulku lillāh, wa l-ḥamdu lillāh, lā ilāha illa llāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lah

We have entered the morning, and dominion belongs to Allah. All praise is for Allah. There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner.

Sahih Muslim 2723 — narrated by ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd. (For evening, replace aṣbaḥnā with amsaynā.)

Sayyid al-Istighfār

Master of seeking forgiveness

ٱللَّٰهُمَّ أَنْتَ رَبِّي، لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، خَلَقْتَنِي وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ، وَأَنَا عَلَىٰ عَهْدِكَ وَوَعْدِكَ مَا ٱسْتَطَعْتُ، أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا صَنَعْتُ، أَبُوءُ لَكَ بِنِعْمَتِكَ عَلَيَّ، وَأَبُوءُ بِذَنْبِي، فَٱغْفِرْ لِي، فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ ٱلذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ

Allāhumma anta Rabbī, lā ilāha illā ant, khalaqtanī wa anā ʿabduk, wa anā ʿalā ʿahdika wa waʿdika ma staṭaʿt, aʿūdhu bika min sharri mā ṣanaʿt, abūʾu laka bi-niʿmatika ʿalayya, wa abūʾu bi-dhanbī, faghfir lī, fa-innahu lā yaghfiru dh-dhunūba illā ant

O Allah, You are my Lord. There is no god but You. You created me, and I am Your servant. I keep Your covenant and Your promise as best I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your favour upon me, and I acknowledge my sin. So forgive me, for none forgives sins except You.

Sahih al-Bukhari 6306 — narrated by Shaddād ibn Aws. The Prophet ﷺ said whoever recites this with conviction in the morning and dies that day, they will enter Paradise.

Bismika Allāhumma amūtu wa aḥyā

In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live.

Upon waking

On waking from sleep

ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّٰهِ ٱلَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ ٱلنُّشُورُ

Al-ḥamdu lillāhi lladhī aḥyānā baʿda mā amātanā wa ilayhi n-nushūr

All praise is for Allah, who gave us life after taking it, and to Him is the resurrection.

Sahih al-Bukhari 6324 — narrated by Ḥudhayfah.

Beginning a journey

When mounting transport

سُبْحَانَ ٱلَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَٰذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ، وَإِنَّا إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ

Subḥāna lladhī sakhkhara lanā hādhā wa mā kunnā lahu muqrinīn, wa innā ilā Rabbinā la-munqalibūn

Glory to Him who has subjected this to us, and we could never have done it by ourselves. Indeed, to our Lord we will return.

Quran 43:13–14, recommended by the Prophet ﷺ when starting a journey — Sahih Muslim 1342, narrated by Ibn ʿUmar.

Entering a town or place

On arrival

ٱللَّٰهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيهَا

Allāhumma bārik lanā fīhā

O Allah, bless it for us.

ٱللَّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ ٱلْهَمِّ وَٱلْحَزَنِ، وَٱلْعَجْزِ وَٱلْكَسَلِ، وَٱلْبُخْلِ وَٱلْجُبْنِ، وَضَلَعِ ٱلدَّيْنِ وَغَلَبَةِ ٱلرِّجَالِ

Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika mina l-hammi wa l-ḥazan, wa l-ʿajzi wa l-kasal, wa l-bukhli wa l-jubn, wa ḍalaʿi d-dayni wa ghalabati r-rijāl

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, from helplessness and laziness, from miserliness and cowardice, from the burden of debt and the oppression of men.

Sahih al-Bukhari 6369 — narrated by Anas ibn Mālik. A duʿā the Prophet ﷺ recited frequently.

Hasbunallāh

When facing difficulty or fear

حَسْبُنَا ٱللَّٰهُ وَنِعْمَ ٱلْوَكِيلُ

Ḥasbunā llāhu wa niʿma l-wakīl

Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs.

Quran 3:173. The Prophet Ibrāhīm ﷺ said this when cast into the fire, and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said it when warned of an enemy gathering — Sahih al-Bukhari 4563.

Inna lillāhi

On hearing of a death or hardship

إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ

Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn

Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we shall return.

Quran 2:156. Recited at the moment of any calamity. Sahih Muslim 918.

Before studying or learning

رَبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا

Rabbi zidnī ʿilmā

My Lord, increase me in knowledge.

Quran 20:114.

For ease in difficulty

Before any challenging task

رَبِّ ٱشْرَحْ لِي صَدْرِي ۝ وَيَسِّرْ لِي أَمْرِي ۝ وَٱحْلُلْ عُقْدَةً مِّن لِّسَانِي ۝ يَفْقَهُوا۟ قَوْلِي

Rabbi shraḥ lī ṣadrī · wa yassir lī amrī · waḥlul ʿuqdatan min lisānī · yafqahū qawlī

My Lord, expand for me my breast, ease for me my task, untie the knot from my tongue, that they may understand my speech.

Quran 20:25–28 — the duʿā of Mūsā ﷺ when commanded to confront Pharaoh.

For the best in this life and the next

Often, especially after Salat

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي ٱلدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي ٱلْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ ٱلنَّارِ

Rabbanā ātinā fi d-dunyā ḥasanatan wa fi l-ākhirati ḥasanatan wa qinā ʿadhāba n-nār

Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

Quran 2:201. The Prophet ﷺ recited this most often according to Anas — Sahih al-Bukhari 6389, Sahih Muslim 2690.
