Throughout the day — aim for 100 times

أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ

Astaghfiru llāha wa atūbu ilayh.

I seek the forgiveness of Allah and I repent to Him.

Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6307, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2702.

By Allah, I seek forgiveness from Allah and repent to Him more than seventy times a day. — The Prophet ﷺ (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6307)

Dua 2

Sayyid al-Istighfār (Master of seeking forgiveness)

Morning and evening

اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ رَبِّي، لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، خَلَقْتَنِي وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ، وَأَنَا عَلَىٰ عَهْدِكَ وَوَعْدِكَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ، أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا صَنَعْتُ، أَبُوءُ لَكَ بِنِعْمَتِكَ عَلَيَّ، وَأَبُوءُ بِذَنْبِي، فَاغْفِرْ لِي، فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ

Allāhumma anta Rabbī, lā ilāha illā ant, khalaqtanī wa anā ʿabduk, wa anā ʿalā ʿahdika wa waʿdika ma staṭaʿt, aʿūdhu bika min sharri mā ṣanaʿt, abūʾu laka bi-niʿmatika ʿalayy, wa abūʾu bi-dhanbī, faghfir lī, fa-innahu lā yaghfiru dh-dhunūba illā ant.

O Allah, You are my Lord. There is no god but You. You created me, and I am Your servant. I hold to Your covenant and Your promise as best I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your favour upon me, and I acknowledge my sin. So forgive me, for none forgives sins except You.

Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6306.

Whoever says this with conviction in the morning and dies that day will be among the people of Paradise.

Dua 3

The dua of Ādam ﷺ

When seeking repentance

رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَا أَنْفُسَنَا وَإِنْ لَّمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ

Rabbanā ẓalamnā anfusanā wa in lam taghfir lanā wa tarḥamnā la-nakūnanna mina l-khāsirīn.

Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves. And if You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will surely be among the losers.

Quran 7:23.

The very first dua of repentance in human history — spoken by Ādam and Ḥawwāʾ after eating from the forbidden tree.

Dua 4

Forgiveness and repentance

After any sin, or as regular dhikr

رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَتُبْ عَلَيَّ إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ التَّوَّابُ الرَّحِيمُ

Rabbighfir lī wa tub ʿalayya innaka anta t-Tawwābu r-Raḥīm.

My Lord, forgive me and accept my repentance. Indeed, You are the Acceptor of Repentance, the Most Merciful.

Abū Dāwūd 1516, Tirmidhī 3434.

The Prophet ﷺ would say this a hundred times in a single sitting.

Dua 5

Comprehensive forgiveness

In sujūd or after prayer

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي ذَنْبِي كُلَّهُ، دِقَّهُ وَجِلَّهُ، وَأَوَّلَهُ وَآخِرَهُ، وَعَلَانِيَتَهُ وَسِرَّهُ

Allāhumma ghfir lī dhanbī kullah, diqqahu wa jillah, wa awwalahu wa ākhirah, wa ʿalāniyyatahu wa sirrah.

O Allah, forgive me all my sins — the small and the great, the first and the last, the public and the private.

Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 483.

Dua 6

Forgiveness for us and the ummah

After prayer, in times of reflection

رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَإِسْرَافَنَا فِي أَمْرِنَا وَثَبِّتْ أَقْدَامَنَا وَانْصُرْنَا عَلَى الْقَوْمِ الْكَافِرِينَ

Rabbanā ghfir lanā dhunūbanā wa isrāfanā fī amrinā wa thabbit aqdāmanā wanṣurnā ʿala l-qawmi l-kāfirīn.

Our Lord, forgive us our sins and the excess in our affairs, make firm our steps, and give us victory over the disbelieving people.

Quran 3:147.

Dua 7

Nūḥ's dua for parents

For yourself and your parents

رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَلِمَنْ دَخَلَ بَيْتِيَ مُؤْمِنًا وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ

Rabbighfir lī wa li-wālidayya wa li-man dakhala baytiya muʾminan wa li-l-muʾminīna wa l-muʾmināt.

My Lord, forgive me and my parents, and whoever enters my house as a believer, and all believing men and believing women.

Quran 71:28.

Dua 8

The dua of Laylat al-Qadr

In Ramadan, especially the last ten nights

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي

Allāhumma innaka ʿAfuwwun tuḥibbu l-ʿafwa faʿfu ʿannī.

O Allah, indeed You are Pardoning, You love to pardon, so pardon me.

Tirmidhī 3513.

ʿĀʾishah asked: “O Messenger of Allah, if I know which night is Laylat al-Qadr, what should I say?” He replied with this dua.

Dua 9

Kaffārat al-Majlis

At the end of any gathering or conversation

سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ

Subḥānaka Allāhumma wa bi-ḥamdik, ashhadu an lā ilāha illā ant, astaghfiruka wa atūbu ilayk.

Glory is to You, O Allah, and praise. I bear witness that there is no god but You. I seek Your forgiveness and I repent to You.

Abū Dāwūd 4859, Tirmidhī 3433.

Whoever says this at the end of a gathering, whatever was said wrongly during that gathering will be forgiven.

Dua 10

Our Lord, do not hold us accountable

In prayer, after prayer, or when seeking mercy

رَبَّنَا لَا تُؤَاخِذْنَا إِنْ نَسِينَا أَوْ أَخْطَأْنَا ۚ رَبَّنَا وَلَا تَحْمِلْ عَلَيْنَا إِصْرًا كَمَا حَمَلْتَهُ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِنَا ۚ رَبَّنَا وَلَا تُحَمِّلْنَا مَا لَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا بِهِ ۖ وَاعْفُ عَنَّا وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَارْحَمْنَا ۚ أَنْتَ مَوْلَانَا فَانْصُرْنَا عَلَى الْقَوْمِ الْكَافِرِينَ

Rabbanā lā tuʾākhidhnā in nasīnā aw akhṭaʾnā. Rabbanā wa lā taḥmil ʿalaynā iṣran kamā ḥamaltahu ʿala lladhīna min qablinā. Rabbanā wa lā tuḥammilnā mā lā ṭāqata lanā bih. Waʿfu ʿannā, waghfir lanā, warḥamnā. Anta mawlānā fanṣurnā ʿala l-qawmi l-kāfirīn.

Our Lord, do not take us to account if we forget or make mistakes. Our Lord, do not lay upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, do not burden us with that which we have no ability to bear. Pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy upon us. You are our Protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people.

Quran 2:286.

Whoever recites the last two verses of Sūrat al-Baqarah at night, they will suffice him.

Dua 11

Istighfār that forgives even the greatest sins

Regularly — a powerful formula of seeking forgiveness

أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ الْعَظِيمَ الَّذِي لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ

Astaghfiru llāha l-ʿAẓīma lladhī lā ilāha illā huwa l-Ḥayyu l-Qayyūmu wa atūbu ilayh.

I seek the forgiveness of Allah the Almighty, besides whom there is no god — the Ever-Living, the Sustainer — and I repent to Him.

Abū Dāwūd 1517, Tirmidhī 3577 — narrated by Bilāl ibn Yasār ibn Zayd.

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever says this will be forgiven, even if he fled from the battlefield." (Abū Dāwūd 1517)
