Lā ilāha illa llāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, lahu l-mulku wa lahu l-ḥamdu, wa huwa ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīr. Subḥāna llāh, wa l-ḥamdu lillāh, wa lā ilāha illa llāh, wa llāhu Akbar, wa lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāhi l-ʿAliyyi l-ʿAẓīm.
There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. To Him belongs all sovereignty and praise, and He is over all things capable. Glory is to Allah, all praise is for Allah, there is no god but Allah, Allah is the Greatest, and there is no power and no strength except with Allah, the Most High, the Most Great.
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 1154.
Whoever wakes up at night and says this, then makes dua, he will be answered. If he makes wuḍūʾ and prays, his prayer will be accepted.
Quran 3:190. Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 4569, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 763.
Ibn ʿAbbās spent a night with the Prophet ﷺ. When the Prophet ﷺ woke for tahajjud, he looked up at the sky and recited these final verses of Āl ʿImrān (3:190–200).
When the Prophet ﷺ woke up at night, he would rub the sleep from his face with his hands.
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 183, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 763 — narrated by Ibn ʿAbbās.
A small physical sunnah that helps you transition from sleep to awareness — then recite the waking duas above.
Dua 6
If you had a bad dream
Upon waking from a nightmare or disturbing dream
أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ
Aʿūdhu billāhi mina sh-Shayṭāni r-rajīm.
I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shayṭān.
Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2262.
(1) Spit lightly to your left three times. (2) Seek refuge in Allah from Shayṭān. (3) Turn to your other side. (4) Do not tell anyone about it. A good dream is from Allah — share it. A bad dream is from Shayṭān — seek refuge and it will not harm you.
