Dua 1

Asking Allah to heal

When ill, or reciting over someone who is ill

اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ النَّاسِ أَذْهِبِ الْبَأْسَ، اشْفِهِ وَأَنْتَ الشَّافِي، لَا شِفَاءَ إِلَّا شِفَاؤُكَ، شِفَاءً لَا يُغَادِرُ سَقَمًا

Allāhumma Rabba n-nās, adh-hibi l-baʾs, ishfihi wa anta sh-Shāfī, lā shifāʾa illā shifāʾuk, shifāʾan lā yughādiru saqamā.

O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the affliction. Heal — for You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing, a healing that leaves behind no illness.

Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5675, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2191.

Dua 2

Dua when visiting the sick ×7

Sitting beside someone who is ill

أَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ الْعَظِيمَ رَبَّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ أَنْ يَشْفِيَكَ

Asʾalu llāha l-ʿAẓīma Rabba l-ʿArshi l-ʿAẓīmi an yashfiyak.

I ask Allah the Almighty, Lord of the Mighty Throne, to heal you.

Abū Dāwūd 3106, Tirmidhī 2083.

Whoever visits a sick person whose time of death has not yet come and says this seven times, Allah will heal him.

Dua 3

Jibrīl's ruqyah

When ill, or over someone who is ill

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ أَرْقِيكَ، مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ يُؤْذِيكَ، مِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ نَفْسٍ أَوْ عَيْنِ حَاسِدٍ، اللَّهُ يَشْفِيكَ، بِسْمِ اللَّهِ أَرْقِيكَ

Bismillāhi arqīk, min kulli shayʾin yuʾdhīk, min sharri kulli nafsin aw ʿayni ḥāsid, Allāhu yashfīk, bismillāhi arqīk.

In the name of Allah I perform ruqyah upon you, from everything that harms you, from the evil of every soul or envious eye, may Allah heal you, in the name of Allah I perform ruqyah upon you.

Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2186.

Jibrīl ﷺ recited this over the Prophet ﷺ when he was ill.

Dua 4

When in pain — place your hand and recite

Whenever you feel pain in your body

The Sunnah method:

Place your hand on the part of your body that hurts
Say Bismillāh — three times
Then recite the duʿā below — seven times

1. Say three times:

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ

Bismillāh.

In the name of Allah.

2. Then say seven times:

أَعُوذُ بِعِزَّةِ اللَّهِ وَقُدْرَتِهِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا أَجِدُ وَأُحَاذِرُ

Aʿūdhu bi-ʿizzati llāhi wa qudratihī min sharri mā ajidu wa uḥādhir.

I seek refuge in Allah's might and power from the evil of what I feel and what I fear.

Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2202 — narrated by ʿUthmān ibn Abi l-ʿĀṣ.

Dua 5

The dua of Ayyūb (Job) ﷺ

During prolonged illness or hardship

رَبِّ إِنِّي مَسَّنِيَ الضُّرُّ وَأَنْتَ أَرْحَمُ الرَّاحِمِينَ

Rabbi innī massaniya ḍ-ḍurru wa anta arḥamu r-rāḥimīn.

My Lord, indeed adversity has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful.

Quran 21:83.

Ayyūb ﷺ suffered for years. When he called out with these words, Allah answered immediately.

Dua 6

Words of comfort for the sick

Visiting an ill person

لَا بَأْسَ، طَهُورٌ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ

Lā baʾs, ṭahūrun in shāʾ Allāh.

No worry, it is a purification, if Allah wills.

Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 3616.

The Prophet ﷺ said this when visiting a sick bedouin. Illness expiates sins.

Dua 7

Seeking ʿāfiyah (well-being) ×3

Morning and evening, three times

اللَّهُمَّ عَافِنِي فِي بَدَنِي، اللَّهُمَّ عَافِنِي فِي سَمْعِي، اللَّهُمَّ عَافِنِي فِي بَصَرِي، لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ

Allāhumma ʿāfinī fī badanī, Allāhumma ʿāfinī fī samʿī, Allāhumma ʿāfinī fī baṣarī, lā ilāha illā ant.

O Allah, grant me well-being in my body. O Allah, grant me well-being in my hearing. O Allah, grant me well-being in my sight. There is no god but You.

Abū Dāwūd 5090.

Ask Allah for ʿāfiyah, for no one is given anything better after certainty of faith than ʿāfiyah.

Dua 8

Seeking refuge from illness

Regularly, as prevention

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْبَرَصِ، وَالْجُنُونِ، وَالْجُذَامِ، وَمِنْ سَيِّئِ الْأَسْقَامِ

Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika mina l-baraṣ, wa l-junūn, wa l-judhām, wa min sayyiʾi l-asqām.

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from leprosy, insanity, elephantiasis, and evil diseases.

Abū Dāwūd 1554.

Dua 9

Sūrat al-Fātiḥah — the greatest healing ×7

Recite over illness, pain, or any affliction

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ ۝ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ ۝ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ ۝ مَالِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ ۝ إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ ۝ اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ ۝ صِرَاطَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا الضَّالِّينَ

Bismillāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm. Al-ḥamdu lillāhi Rabbi l-ʿālamīn. Ar-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm. Māliki yawmi d-dīn. Iyyāka naʿbudu wa iyyāka nastaʿīn. Ihdinā ṣ-ṣirāṭa l-mustaqīm. Ṣirāṭa lladhīna anʿamta ʿalayhim, ghayri l-maghḍūbi ʿalayhim wa la ḍ-ḍāllīn.

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is for Allah, Lord of all the worlds. The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Master of the Day of Judgement. You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help. Guide us to the straight path. The path of those You have blessed — not of those who have earned Your anger, nor of those who have gone astray.

Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5007.

Called “ar-Ruqyah” and “ash-Shāfiyah” (the cure). Recite over yourself, blow gently into your palms, and wipe over the area of illness.

Dua 10

For the best in this life and the next

Frequently

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Rabbanā ātinā fi d-dunyā ḥasanatan wa fi l-ākhirati ḥasanatan wa qinā ʿadhāba n-nār.

Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

Quran 2:201.
